Kyphosis refers to an excessive outward curvature of the upper spine, resulting in a hunched or rounded back appearance. While mild kyphosis is common, severe forms can cause pain, stiffness, breathing issues, and mobility limitations. Dr. Salim provides comprehensive treatment options for both adolescent and adult kyphosis cases.
What Is Kyphosis?
Kyphosis is a spinal deformity characterized by an exaggerated curvature in the thoracic spine (mid-back). The normal curvature ranges between 20°–45°; anything beyond that is considered hyperkyphosis.
There are three main types:
- Postural Kyphosis – common in adolescents, due to poor posture
- Scheuermann’s Kyphosis – structural, affecting growth plates
- Congenital or Degenerative Kyphosis – from birth or aging/spinal disease
Symptoms of Kyphosis
Symptoms depend on severity and type:
- A visibly rounded or hunched upper back
- Back pain, stiffness, and muscle fatigue
- In severe cases: difficulty breathing, reduced lung capacity
- Reduced mobility and spinal flexibility
- Fatigue during standing or walking
Psychological effects such as low self-esteem are also common, especially in younger patients.
How Is Kyphosis Diagnosed?
Evaluation includes:
- Physical examination and posture assessment
- X-rays and MRI scans to determine the angle of curvature and spinal structure
- Assessing for neurological involvement or spinal cord compression
Early diagnosis is key to preventing progression.
Treatment Approaches
Treatment is based on age, degree of curvature, and symptoms:
Non-Surgical Options:
- Physical therapy to strengthen postural muscles
- Bracing in adolescents to halt curve progression
- Pain management with anti-inflammatories
- Regular follow-ups to monitor curve changes
Surgical Options (for severe or progressive cases):
- Spinal fusion surgery to realign and stabilize the spine
- Deformity correction with instrumentation and rods
- Minimally invasive techniques for eligible patients
Surgery is often recommended for curves over 70–80°, or when kyphosis impairs lung or heart function.
Life After Treatment
- Most patients experience significant improvement in posture, pain relief, and quality of life
- Post-surgical recovery includes physical rehab and activity restrictions
- Long-term results are excellent when performed by experienced spine surgeons
Dr. Salim’s Experience with Kyphosis Cases
Dr. Salim has successfully treated complex kyphosis deformities in both young and elderly patients. He is skilled in traditional and minimally invasive correction techniques, often handling cases involving scoliosis or spinal imbalance in combination with kyphosis.
